The Gods and Goddesses
Ancient Egyptians believed in many gods and goddesses. They thought that each of them played a role in maintaining peace and harmony. Some gods were responsible for creation, some brought floods, some protected them and some took care of them after death. They believed that it was important to worship all these gods to maintain peace and harmony.
‘Official’ gods and goddesses of the state (e.g. Amun, Horus and Bastet) were worshipped by pharaohs and priests in large temples. Other gods and goddesses (e.g. Bed and Tawaret) that protected people from dangers in their daily life were worshipped by ordinary people in their homes. Some gods and goddesses had animal heads to represent their actions.
