Ancient Egyptians - Who were they?
Most ancient Egyptians were field workers, farmers, craftsmen and scribes. There were also small groups of people who were nobles. All these people together made up the population of ancient Egypt.
The Ancient Egyptian Civilization developed around the river Nile. Even though at first the Egyptians lost their crops, homes and lives as it flooded every year, later they realized that the river would flood at the same time each year. So they started to plan their life around it. They noticed that each time the river flooded, it deposited rich silt that was perfect for agriculture. The river was a great source of water, food (fish and birds) and useful for transportation. They were able to trade with other people along the river too. The Nile was also a barrier against any attacks from other countries.
Ancient Egyptians thought that Egypt was divided into two types of land, the black land and the red land. The black land was fertile and formed when rich silt was deposited by the Nile. The red land was the desert on two sides of Egypt. The desert protected egypt from invasions by other countries and it was a source of precious metals and semi precious stones.
